MacBook Pro 13 UJ8A8 SATA Optical Drive Replacement Unit in Silver

This product is a built-in optical drive, also known as a SuperDrive, designed as a replacement part for MacBook Pro 13-inch models and other compatible older Apple laptops. It is specified by the manufacturer code UJ8A8 and features a standard SATA interface for connection to the laptop's internal motherboard. The drive's dimensions are precisely 128mm wide by 128mm deep by 9.5mm high, ensuring it fits correctly into the dedicated bay within the laptop chassis. Finished in a silver colour, it maintains a consistent look with the original internal components. This unit is supplied individually, providing a direct solution for users needing to restore disc reading and burning functionality after a drive failure or upgrade.

Features and Construction

This optical drive is defined by its core technical specifications and physical build, which are essential for correct compatibility and installation.

Material and Build

The drive is constructed from materials typical for an internal laptop optical drive, including a metal frame for rigidity and plastic components for the external casing and tray mechanism. The silver finish is consistent with Apple's internal hardware aesthetic. The key technical identifier for this unit is the manufacturer specification UJ8A8, which distinguishes it from other optical drive models and is crucial for sourcing the correct replacement part.

Size and Practical Fit

The dimensions are a critical feature: 128mm in width, 128mm in depth, and 9.5mm in height. This slim form factor is designed specifically to slot into the optical drive bay of the targeted MacBook Pro 13 models. The SATA interface—a standard connection type for storage devices—ensures it communicates correctly with the laptop's system once installed. No additional brackets or adapters are mentioned, indicating it is intended for a direct replacement where the original drive shared these exact specifications.

Uses and Placement

This component serves a specific function within a limited range of devices, focusing on repair and restoration of original functionality.

Event or Professional Use

For IT professionals, repair technicians, or service centres, this UJ8A8 specified drive is a known part for servicing older MacBook Pro laptops presented for optical drive repairs. It allows for a like-for-like replacement, returning the laptop to its original specification without requiring external peripherals. The precise dimensions mean the repair process involves a straightforward swap, helping to streamline service workflows for these particular models.

Everyday Home Use

For an individual user with a MacBook Pro 13 whose built-in SuperDrive has failed, this part offers a way to repair the laptop themselves or provide the correct component to a local repair shop. It restores the ability to install software from discs, play DVDs or CDs, and burn data to blank media without relying on an external USB drive. This can be particularly useful for accessing legacy software or media stored on physical discs.

Benefits and Buying Value

The value of this product lies in its specificity and the practical solution it provides for a defined technical problem.

Reuse and Low Maintenance

By installing this replacement drive, you extend the functional life of your older MacBook Pro, avoiding the need to purchase a new laptop or permanently resort to external accessories. Once installed, the drive requires no specialised maintenance beyond general care for the laptop itself. It integrates seamlessly, returning the computer to its original, self-contained state with internal disc reading capabilities.

Why Choose This Product

This optical drive is chosen primarily because it matches the exact specification—UJ8A8, SATA interface, 128x128x9.5mm dimensions, silver colour—required by certain MacBook Pro 13 models. This match is crucial for a successful installation. Its value is in enabling a precise repair. It is not a universal drive; its benefit is its confirmed compatibility for the specific laptops it was designed for, based on the provided product data.
